Fear on Four – OTR Plot Summaries

BBC 4

Fear on 4

1988-1992, 1997
Known Episodes: 48

Hosted by The Man in Black, Edward De Souza, the BBC continued its long tradition of radio horror that originally began with Appointment with Fear back in the 1940s.

The Man in Black narrated spooky half-hour format radio shows beginning with Appointment with Fear (1943 to 1955), (a show appropriately titled The Man in Black ran in 1949, of which no episodes remain,) and in 1975 Appointment with Fear returned to the air, with the Man in Black now played by Edward De Souza.

De Souza returned again in 1988 with Fear on Four, (Broadcast of course, on BBC Radio 4). Four seasons (or “series” in the UK,) were produced between 1988 and 1993 with a fifth series to follow under the same name in 1997, all hosted by De Souza (though the original WWII Man in Black was actor Valentine Dyall). Wonderfully, The Man in Black returned for an encore of new performances, now with Mark Gatiss as the host in 2009 (2009-2011).

Every Detail But One

A single mother-to-be begins hearing voices and becomes scared until she realizes it’s her baby calling out for help from the womb. (Spoilers:) She kills herself when the baby says ”It’s too late”. But then doctors save the child’s life at the hospital. Her psychic premonitions were a message from the future. Which doesn’t really make sense… why would the woman cry out to a mother she never knew as she died? The whole story left me feeling yucky all over.
